EPFO 2026: New ₹25,000 Wage Ceiling, EPF Scheme Changes & What Employers Need to Know

22.09.26 02:44 PM - By Right Advisors

This is not another EPFO update that concerns employers and HR professionals. The EPFO wage cap has been increased from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month, effective from 17 September 2026. This increase is expected to cover over 51 lakh employees under mandatory EPFO coverage.

However, the more pertinent question for employers is what they should do about this change for their employees.

What Changes in EPFO 2026?

In EPFO 2026, the wage ceiling for mandatory EPFO coverage has been increased from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month.

In other words, employees who join employment with wages between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 and are currently outside mandatory EPFO coverage can be covered under the statutory social security scheme as per the applicable provisions.

Other EPFO Initiatives that Employers Need to Know About

The maximum wage limit of ₹25,000 is not the only significant EPFO initiative in 2026.

The Employees’ Enrolment Campaign (EEC) 2026 offers employers an opportunity to enrol eligible employees voluntarily into the EPF scheme during the period from 1 April 2009 to 31 March 2026 as a one-time initiative. The EEC will stay active until 31 October 2026.

VISHWAS 2026 is another one-time initiative for dispute settlement regarding certain damages under Section 14B of the EPF rules.

It’s high time for employers to think about a compliance review of EPF requirements.

What Should Employers Do Now?

Rather than waiting for payroll concerns to come up, businesses should take into account:

Records of employees' eligibility and EPF eligibility

Current payroll computations

EPF-related documents

Employees who might not be covered under this

Upcoming compliance or damages-related issues

The business's HR and payroll processes internally

The most important lesson from the discussion above is straightforward: To remain EPFO-compliant in 2026, companies need to keep themselves abreast of developments and review their internal records.
